Fatima and Obidos day Tour
Your visit to Portugal would never be complete without visiting Óbidos, where its whitewashed houses adorned with bougainvillea and honeysuckle.
The village of Obidos was conquered in the crusades to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal in 1148, centuries later, the Portuguese king D. Dinis offered Óbidos to his wife, Queen Isabel as a wedding gift.
Foolishly surrounded by medieval defensive walls and crowned by the Moorish castle, Obidos is one of the best examples of the English medieval fortress, for this reason it was part of the Templar Castles.
Our beautiful Fatima and Obidos day Tour will start with a visit to the Fatima sanctuary, about an hour’s drive from Lisbon where we will find three places of extreme interest and if you wish you can attend a mass, the apparitions Chapel as it is affectionately known, it was the first Chapel to be built immediately after the apparitions, a place of prominence, not for its size or grandeur, but for its importance.
On one side is the Basilica of the Rosary, which was built in 1928 in a neo-baroque architectural style, where today are the tombs of the children (Francisco and Jacinta) and also the tomb of Sister Lúcia, who died in 2005.
At the other end, the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity, built in 2007 and has more than 8,000 seats and 40,000 m² of total area designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis.
About 3 kilometers from the sanctuary of Fatima, we have Valinhos, where the three Shepherds (Francisco, Jacinta and Luçia de Jesus) originally came from.
The visit to their homes is free and could be a great way to understand the humility of these families and who knows how to try to take our imagination to the beginning of the 20th century and understand what life would be like in this difficult period.
For this memorable day, we have several options for your lunch, the one that possibly brings together the best consensus at the Tia Alice restaurant in Fatima.
Considered by many to be one of the best restaurants in Portugal, the restaurant Tia Alice, owned by Dona Alice Marto, who from the height of her 80s, continues to work day after day in her restaurant, making a point of participating in all the dishes that come out of your restaurant.
A restaurant that does not have many options of dishes (do what you do best), with Cd Fish, Duck rice or even Veal Roast as main dishes.
After lunch, we then proceed to Obidos, (a UNESCO world heritage site), a village that looks more like a fairy tale, where on every corner of its narrow whitewashed streets a knight may appear in search of the enchanted princess.
The town of Obidos, given its strategic position, belonged to the defensive pentagon of the five Castles, still in the Templar period, a romantic town that was even more asserted when the Portuguese king D. Dinis decided to offer Óbidos and his residents to his future wife D. Isabel , as a wedding gift that would end up being part of the Casa das Rainhas, most of the Portuguese queens from where they would get several dividends.
No less important and recognized will be the sour cherry, an alcoholic drink, made with a kind of wild cherry, which you can also try with a glass of chocolate, now you know where the Mon Cherry originates
Your Fatima and Obidos day Tour, may end where it started (your hotel or apartment), or if you wish you can end it elsewhere, within the city limits (Shopping, airport, restaurant etc etc).
