Coimbra and Fatima Tour from Oporto specially designed fir the ones staying in the city of Oporto and would like to see two of the most emblematic Portuguese cities.
One known for being the city of the knowledge with one of the oldest Universities in Europe, Coimbra where the Joanine Library was considered one of the the most beautiful libraries in the world.
In Fatima we will find the largest Marian Shrine in Europe, a true demonstration of peace, the visit to its two Basilicas are essential, the Basilica of Our Lady of the White Rosary, built in the 20th century in a conservative way and where today are buried the bodies of the three shepherds, Francisco and Jacinta who died still children and also Lucia de Jesus, who died in 2005.
The Holy Trinity with a contemporary architecture, but quite interesting and even the oldest “Chapel” of all, a small chapel where originally there was a tree where our Lady appeared to the three children.
Our tour will begin with the visit to the library in Coimbra, built in the XVIII century on the former prison of the University, simply one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
Its decoration was only finished, close to the XVIII century, the renovation it, on the ceiling the frescoes were executed by Mestre António Ribeiro and Vicente Nunes, and the portrait of Dom João V was done by the Italian Domenico Dupra.
The “Baixa de Coimbra” situated, between the Mondego river and the city highest district, a pleasant sidewalk street where you can relax and get lost in this charming city narrow streets and beautiful alleys, and squares, you will find countless cafes, pastry shops and restaurants.
Rich in culture and with an unforgettable gastronomy, this area has been the commercial center of the city for hundreds if not thousands of years, maintaining its genuine atmosphere and unique personality.
Time to visit it, starting with the romanesque style 12th century Cathedral, followed by walk, where you can see the famous Arc of the Almedina and visit the Church of Santa Cruz where the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques (Afonso I) is buried.
This region is famous for the piglet ” à Bairrada”, one of the most appreciated delicacies in Portugal, considered as one of the 7 wonders of the Lusitanian gastronomy, a dish that takes several hours to be executed, turnings the piglet in the hood oven from one side to the other to keep the toast homogenous, in a recurring act, however, the piglet is being withdrawn from time to time and sprinkled with white wine from the region, with the help of a water spray.
On May 13, 1917 three children of humble families after the Mass went to pasture the flock of sheep in the lands of the father of one of them, there they felt a flash of lightning, in a bright and serene sky.
According to Sister Lucy’s descriptions, it was “a Lady dressed all in white, brighter than the sun, Our Lady asks the three little children to come six months in a row on the 13th at the same time.
Today, at one end, the theres the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima with its tower of 65 meters. In the center, the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and, at the other end, the Chapel of the Apparitions, precisely where Our Lady told the shepherds to built a chapel, and at the opposite end, the Church of the Most Holy Trinity built in 2007.
