However, the truth is that there are no records of this musical style until the first half of the nineteenth century, and it is most likely that Fado has evolved as a descendant style of the middle-class songs.
In Fado, the fadista (singer) is accompanied by the Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar that provides the percussion, sometimes Fado is “disputed” by two singers (in some cases improvising the verses), in which case it is called “Fado à desgarrada”.

Fado is, the real expression of the Portuguese soul, since the moment of Portugal birth, emerged in a crossroad of cultures where its origins go back to the ancient times.
During the dictatorship the “Casas de Fado” began to be born in Lisbon districts like Alfama, Mouraria, Castelo and Bairro Alto, nevertheless to sing was necessary a kind of work register booklet and a repertoire approved by the Commission of Censorship the environments where it was most common to hear the Fado (bohemian, sung in taverns, brothels ).
Even Church made efforts to ban it, this did not happen because many powerful people came to live in the neighborhoods around the Castle, thus becoming a style also accepted by the aristocrats .
The first famous voice of Fado was Severa (full name Maria Severa Onofriana), lover of the Count of Vimioso, and who sang in the neighborhood of the Mouraria in Lisbon, however internationally, the first fado singer with World projection was Amalia Rodrigues.

My sister and I were in September 2017 in Lisbon and we had the Fado dinner and the Tour to Coimbra and Porto with the company Walkborder Tours.
